Planning your online shop

Here are some things to consider when planning an online shop:

    • Have you bought and registered your domain name?
There are lots of websites where you can search and register your domain name such as www.123-reg.co.uk It is usually worth buying both .co.uk and .com versions to prevent your competitors from using your name.

    • How are you going to accept payment?
There are lots of options for payment processing. If you are on a tight budget you could look at signing up with www.paypal.co.uk – it’s secure, free and they charge per transaction. There are well known payment gateway processing companies such as Worldpay, Sagepay. Some charge a set up fee and there is usually a monthly fee starting from £20 per month – you will need a Merchant account to apply for these – this can be applied for via your business bank but shop around as the fee can vary.

    • What pages/sections do you need?
Decide on what pages you will need – these can include Home, About, Contact, Links, Terms & Conditions,  Privacy Policy, Shopping Information (delivery times, costs, refund policy etc). You can also incorporate a blog for keeping customers up-to-date with new products, events etc

    • What shop categories do you need?
Decide on your main shop categories. If you have a lot it would be worth splitting these down into sub-categories.

    • What photos do you need?
You will professional product images of all your products. Sometimes your suppliers can supply a CD of images for you or if the products are your own you will need to arrange for professional photography. It is worth checking with your web designer prior to this to make sure the photographer supplies them in the correct format. You may also need lifestyle images for the home and about pages.

    • Can you write your own content?
You will need written content for each page and also for each product. If you have neither the time nor expertise for content writing then it may be worth considering using a professional copywriter – ideally someone who has experience of writing content with search engine optimisation in mind.

    • What postage methods are you going to use?
The size, weight and value of your products will determine your delivery method which can include Royal Mail standard 1st and 2nd class for non-urgent, low value goods, Special Delivery for guaranteed service; Parcelforce and various couriers also offer a variety of services. If your products are valuable (over £50) remember to make sure the delivery company covers you for loss or damage. If you are selling worldwide you will also need to investigate European and worldwide delivery options.

    • Will you need business insurance?
If you are holding stock remember to make sure you have a valid insurance policy for loss or damaged stock.

    • How are you going to market your website?
This can include SEO (search engine optimisation), email marketing, using Twitter and Facebook, submitting your website to relevant web directories, sending Press Releases to editors who may be interested in your products,  ensuring you include your web address on all your promotional material such as brochures, business cards, letterheads  to give your business exposure and held build your brand, offline advertising such as magazines, newspapers and leaflets.  You could also look at PPC (pay per click) such as Google Adwords.
